{"id":3977,"date":"2021-11-09T11:41:16","date_gmt":"2021-11-09T08:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.orgbalt.eu\/?p=3977"},"modified":"2021-11-09T11:46:06","modified_gmt":"2021-11-09T08:46:06","slug":"life-orgbalt-organized-side-event-at-the-cop26-widely-attended","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.orgbalt.eu\/?p=3977","title":{"rendered":"LIFE OrgBalt organized side event at the COP26 widely attended"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>On November 8, 2021, LIFE OrgBalt partners &#8211; Michael Succow Foundation and Latvian State Forest Research Institute Silava \u2013 organized the side event at the UN Climate Change Conference COP26 Peatland Pavilion \u201cOrganic soils and peatlands in the Baltic countries: Mitigation measures &amp; monitoring, paludiculture and Carbon farming approaches\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The side event was widely attended by COP negotiators, policy makers and scientists both at the Peatland Pavilion in Glasgow and online at the Virtual Peatland Pavilion. The event allowed delegates from the Baltic States to describe their views on the importance of measures for mitigation and current and future policy approaches for organic soil and peatland management. Peatland status and climate change mitigation measures in the Baltic countries were highlighted by Elina Baltroka, Ministry of Environmental protection and regional development of Latvia, Kristi Klaas, Estonian Ministry of Environment and Kristina Simonaityte, Lithuanian Ministry of Agriculture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ieva L\u012bc\u012bte, Manager of the LIFE OrgBalt project, introduced with the project and its preliminary results\nhighlighting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>GHG emission measurement process in organic soils to\nelaborate regional emission factors for nutrient rich organic soils thus\nimproving national GHG inventories;<\/li><li>Implemented climate change mitigation measures to\nreduce GHG emissions from organic soils;<\/li><li>Tools being elaborated for analysis and projections of\nclimate change mitigation impacts.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.orgbalt.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/LIFEOrgBalt_prelimenary-results_COP26-Peatlands-pavilion_-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Please find the LIFE OrgBalt presentation: HERE. (opens in a new tab)\">Please find the LIFE OrgBalt presentation: HERE.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jan Peters, CEO Michael Succow Foundation, introduced with results from\nEUKI project \u201cPaludiculture in the Baltic Countries \u2013 Climate Protection by\nProductive Use of Rewetted Peatlands\u201d. Paludiculture perspectives and Carbon\nfarming approaches in the Baltics were presented. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event was closed with an expert discussion on peatlands role in climate change
