LIFE OrgBalt receives award for the most significant contribution to solving climate change in Latvia

December 1, 2020 – LIFE OrgBalt received the “LIFE AWARD 2020” as the most significant climate change solution project in Latvia in 2020, which is implemented within the framework of the EC environment and climate program LIFE.

At the annual ceremony “LIFE AWARD 2020” the project LIFE OrgBalt received the award “The most significant contribution to solving climate change”, as well as was nominated in categories “Highest rated new project” and “Most financially voluminous project”.

The “LIFE AWARD” is an event honouring EC environment and climate program LIFE projects implemented in Latvia. The ceremony was organized for the third time within the LIFE program capacity building project in Latvia CAP LIFE LAT. The aim of the event is to promote the visibility of the LIFE program in Latvia by identifying and demonstrating the most successful implementers of LIFE projects in Latvia. In total, 20 LIFE program projects were evaluated in 6 categories.

The “LIFE AWARD 2020” took place on Facebook LIVE. Participants of the ceremony were addressed by Angelo Salsi, Head of the European Commission’s LIFE Program, and Alda Ozola, Deputy State Secretary for Environmental Protection of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of Latvia, and Ilona Mendziņa, National Contact Point for LIFE program in Latvia.

Receiving the award Ieva Līcīte, coordinator of LIFE OrgBalt, thanked for the award and invited to visit the project demonstration sites in Latvia and Finland starting next year spring, where it will be possible to see various climate change mitigation measures for organic soil management in agricultural and forest lands. This is a topical issue at EU level that has a major impact on the overall GHG emissions balance.

The project manager thanked all 8 project partners from 5 countries for their contribution!

LIFE OrgBalt is being implemented by Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava” in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Latvia, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, University of Tartu (Estonia), Natural Resources Institute Finland LUKE, Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry, Michael Succow Foundation (Germany) and Association Baltic Coasts (Latvia) from 2019 to 2023 and has received funding from the LIFE Programme of the European Union and the State Regional Development Agency of Latvia.
