The 4th LIFE OrgBalt Steering Group meeting held

On June 29, 2021, the 4th Steering Group meeting of the LIFE OrgBalt project was held to introduce international stakeholders with the project progress during the first half of 2021. Please find the presentations of the Steering Group meeting: HERE.

LIFE OrgBalt progess in brief during the first half of 2021:

  1. Harmonized GHG measuring techniques among Baltic States and Finland;
  2. Data storage system elaborated for GHG measurements;
  3. Depth to water maps for Baltic States finalized and available;
  4. 16 climate change mitigation demonstration sites are established – 13 in Latvia and 3 in Finland, including 11 demonstrations in forest land and 5 in agricultural land to demonstrate cost effective GHG mitigation measures in practice;
  5. Analysis ongoing of current situation and possibilities to include project knowledge in practical policy planning documents in project partner countries;
  6. Tool for organic soil management impacts modeling at farm level – simulation tool or PPC model as prototype has been developed. The first three management scenarios added to the model.
  7. Informative dissemination activities ongoing – all demonstration sites’ notice boards installed, two scientific publications, project leaflets in 6 languages, technical article, documentary and newsletters produced.

The Steering Group held online was attended by almost 30 specialists, scientists and policy makers. In total the Steering group consists of members from 16 organizations in one or another way caring about organic soil management in agriculture and forestry. The LIFE OrgBalt shares its progress and results with the international Steering Group members twice a year.

LIFE OrgBalt is being implemented by Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava” in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Latvia, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, University of Tartu (Estonia), Natural Resources Institute Finland LUKE, Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry, Michael Succow Foundation (Germany) and Association Baltic Coasts (Latvia) from 2019 to 2023 and has received funding from the LIFE Programme of the European Union and the State Regional Development Agency of Latvia.
